Official vs unofficial phones: what to check before you buy

Neuron Tech

Warranty, network registration and resale — the real differences, and how to check a phone's IMEI yourself.

"Official" phones are imported by the brand's authorised distributor, with duties paid and the handset registered for use in Bangladesh. "Unofficial" phones come in through other channels — often cheaper, but with trade-offs.

What changes

  • Warranty. Official phones carry the brand's warranty at its service centres. Unofficial phones usually have only a seller warranty, if any.
  • Network access. Bangladesh's regulator (BTRC) runs a device register (NEIR) to keep unregistered handsets off mobile networks. How strictly it is applied has changed over time, so an unregistered phone carries a real risk.
  • Resale. Official phones are easier to sell later.

Check the IMEI yourself

  1. Dial *#06# to see the phone's IMEI number(s), and make sure they match the box.
  2. Use BTRC's IMEI check. At the time of writing you can SMS KYD <15-digit IMEI> to 16002; check BTRC's website for the current method.

Every phone listing shows an Official or Unofficial label declared by the seller and reviewed by our catalogue team, along with who gives the warranty. If a label looks wrong, use "Report this product" on the listing.
